"The Outside" by Taylor Swift relates to the Moviegoer because of Binx’s struggle feeling like he is not accepted as a Southerner. Binx decides to explore life and see what gets thrown his way. That relates to this line in the song ,“I didn't know what I would find When I went looking for a reason, I know” because he realized he despised Chicago but he would not have known if he had not gone to find himself. “You saw me there, but never knew That I would give it all up to be A part of this, a part of you”, this represents how Binx could have felt when he spotted Kate on the bus, whom he loved very much. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ijFtoZb_OY (this song is not on spotify)
"I Was Here" by Lady Antebellum relates to the Moviegoer for many reasons. “I will prove you wrong If you think I'm all talk, you're in for a shock 'Cause this dream's too strong and before too long”, I interpret these lyrics as Binx’s internal struggle trying to prove to himself that he is worth more than he thinks he is. Bing, in the first chapter expresses his desire for a change or a new passion in life. He is his own worst enemy in this situation due to the lifestyle he has been living all of his life. Everyday, he goes to his local movie house, carries around his newspaper, map of Gentilly, and phone book. His repetitive routine made his life feel boring and basic.
"Small Town USA" by Justin Moore makes a big connection towards Binx Bollings’ life. This song is about living in a small town, which is similar to Gentilly, the town where Binx lives. Gentilly is an unknown town in New Orleans that Binx thought no one knew about. Justin Moore explains that people considered the small town to be a prison, but he ended up liking the small town. That relates to Binx, in that he hated the south but went north and despised it just as much. The trip to Chicago made him appreciate home. He reveals towards the end of the novel that he enjoys the peaceful environment of his small town.
"Fa La Fa Lee" by the Sparks is a song about incest. This song could describe Binx and Kate as a couple. Kate Cutrer is Binx’s adoptive cousin, but she is still considered family to him, Aunt Emily, and Uncle Jules. Binx falls in love with her on the train to Chicago in which he discovers all of her admirable characteristics. Kate is described as a beautiful girl, so it is no surprise he is attracted to her. Kate goes through tough times and the only one who can save her is Binx, they spend numerous hours together and inevitable grow closer, which resulted in their love. The lyrics, "Fa la fa lee, she ain't heavy she's a brother to me", explain how Binx understands that they are family through marriage but cannot help his feelings.
"We Remain as Two" by Page France accurately describes Kate when we first meet her in the story. She had just lost her fiancé in an accident and is extremely distraught. This song is about someone losing a loved one. Kate was depressed and contemplated suicide due to her hopelessness. In my understanding the lyrics, "And if they give you your wings will you think to give me your arms And if they let you keep your shell can I take and wear it as my guard", could be her fiancé providing her with his "wings" in the form of a new love, which was Binx. It was a miracle that Kate was able to find someone to lift her back up after the tragedy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GI-yDwtUnwA (this song is not on spotify)
I came up with the title as a spin on words. The song, "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele, in some ways connects to the overall sadness of the novel. Binx Bolling is the name of the main character and I decided to substitute rolling, with Bolling to connect with the book more. Binx and Kate both struggle in their life and their internal struggle is the one Adele is portraying. Therefore this title correlates nicely with the book.
